Instructor Jan D. Narkiewicz

Jan D. Narkiewicz (B.S. Computer Systems Engineering, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) is chief technical officer of Software Pronto, Inc. His areas of expertise include nearly all Microsoft technologies (SQL Server, C++, Win32, .NET, ADO.NET, Windows Forms, WPF, Silverlight, LINQ, WCF, WF and VSTO). Jan has authored and coauthored a dozen books for Wrox and Apress and a like number of articles. Jan serves as academic coordinator for UC Berkeley Extension’s .NET/Windows program. He has taught at U.C. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, U.C. Santa Cruz Extension, San Francisco State University and Golden Gate University. The conferences Jan has spoken at include VS Live, Collaborate, Office Developers Conference and Oracle World. His clients include E*TRADE, Visa, eBay, and Oracle.

Course Objectives

After completing this course students should be able to:

  1. Query SQL Serve tables and retrieve data using the following types of joins
    1. INNER JOIN
    2. LEFT OUTER JOIN
    3. RIGHT OUTER JOIN
    4. OUTER JOIN
    5. CROSS JOIN
  2. Manipulate data using
    1. DELETE to remove rows of data
    2. INSERT to create rows of data
    3. UPDATE to alter rows of data
  3. Develop SQL code against fully and partially qualified SQL object names
  4. Work comfortably with SQL Manager its wizards and object administration screens as well as SQL Manager’s programming environment.

What’s Required

This course will consist of lectures and labs. Students are required to bring in their own Windows based laptops in order to perform the lab. Laptops should be configured as follows:

  1. Laptop should come pre-installed with SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2009 developer edition (SQL Server Developer editions costs approximately $50).
  2. Students that do not have access to SQL Server will be given a virtual PC to work with. The student’s machine should contain at least 3 GB RAM and have 30 GB of free space (an external USB drive can be used).
    1. Students running Windows XP or Vista should pre-install Virtual PC 2007 SP1 (a free application from Microsoft):

Course Structure

This is a 2-day SQL Fundamentals training class that includes a 45 minute lunch and several short breaks during each training day. Course will include up to 9 students to provide the students with the maximum instructor attention.
